POCA _ Nitro's Wildcats did it again.
They posted a 4-6 record. In the last 13 seasons, Nitro has
been at .500 (5-5) or within a game of it (4-6 or 6-4) 11 times.
An offensive outburst and overpowering defense paced the win on Friday.
Poca scored first when Jeff Watts passed to Terry
Sites on a
56-yard play, but Nitro roared back for a 14-7 quarter lead and
boosted it to 21-7 by halftime.
Dwight Patton a 5-8, 140-pound sophomore, returned a kickoff 78
yards for a touchdown, and then Chad Hemmings went 1
yard and
sophomore Tris Cavender
four for touchdowns.
In the fourth quarter, Poca cut its deficit to 21-12
when
passed to J. K. Savilla on an 11-yard play. Nitro
came back on a
one-yard TD run by Hemmings and Donnie Withrow ran for a two-point
conversion to end the scoring.
On defense, Nitro limited Poca to three first downs _
all by.
penalty (Nitro was penalized 16 times for 190 yards) _
and a minus 56
yards on the ground.
"Our line was bigger and we got them in a lot of long yardage
situtations and did a lot of stunting,' said Nitro
coach Greg Cyrus
Hemmings, in addition to his two touchdowns, intercepted
two.
passes (giving him five in the last two games) and recovered a fumble
Pete Hinton, 6-2, 205-pound senior linebacker, and Brian Smith,
a 6-7, 265-pound junior, also played leading roles on the defensive unit, Cyrus
said.
The victory in the 66th game of the Nitro-Poca series
gave the
Wildcats a 36-24-6 lead over the Dots.
DWIGHT PATTON returned a kickoff 78 yards for a Nitro touchdown
CHAD HEMMINGS scored two touchdowns and intercepted two passes
for Nitro.
