DuPont defensive back Chris Robinson could be a candidate for an
"All-Madden Team.'
And not just for his 12 solo open-field tackles and five assists
against the Nitro Wildcats Friday night. We're talking about staring
downfield, searching for the ball carrier at top speed, and attacking
him.
"I just like to line up and head down the field and just go
as fast as I can,'said Robinson. "Just give me
somebody in front
of so I can bang some heads.'
DuPont's "headhunter' and the rest of the Panther defensive
unit stalked on their prey all night long, giving up 188 yards in
total offense. According to DuPont's records, the Panthers yield an
average of 215.9.
"It all starts with Bobbie (Howard),' said Robinson, when
asked who gets the defense motivated. "If he doesn't go, then we
can't go either.'
DuPont, the Mountain State Athletic Conference Gold Division
leaders and Class AAA's No. 1-ranked team, pummelled
Nitro 50-6
Friday at Underwood Field.
DuPont quarterback Keith Fout completed seven of 11
attempts for
119 yards and three touchdowns, including two to Jay Jones. His TD
passes broke an MSAC record of 14, set last season by Mike Virag
of
Hurricane.
"Our quarterback executed well tonight,' said DuPont head
coach Dick Whitman.
The other touchdown pass went to all-everything Randy Moss, who
broke his own MSAC touchdown reception by catching his 11th of the
year.
Tailback Sam Singleton ran for 262 yards on 12 carries including
touchdown runs of 35 and 80 yards, the latter from the first play
from scrimmage.
"It was just play designed up the middle and I just hit the
hole,' said Singleton, who now has 1,128 yards on 81 attempts and 13
touchdowns, said Panthers statastician Ed Knapp."Randy (Moss) threw
about five or six blocks downfield to spring me loose.'
"I was more impressed with Moss' blocks than anything,' said
Nitro coach Greg Cyrus. "They have just too many weapons to cover
all at once.'
Cyrus said of a Moss 81-yard punt return that was nullified by a
clipping penalty: "He hit a gear that most people don't have.' And
of his future: "He doesn't have to worry about going to college, he
can go ahead and get an agent.'
Nitro, which started sophomore center Jay Johnson in place of
injured Eric Raines, showed no fear on their opening drive. But the
drive stalled on a missed 45-yard field goal attempt.
That was it for the Wildcats until the fourth quarter, when
David Kessler blocked a punt and Justin Valleau
recovered it in the
end zone.
The Wildcats' leading rusher, Dan Taylor, was forced to leave
the game with a sprained shoulder and backup QB Ryan Blake was
knocked out of the game. Cyrus said both should be ready next week
against Herbert Hoover.
The Panthers come home next week to face giant-killer Capital
High, an 8-7 upset winner over
