PSSSSST, heard the latest? Here it is.

- A brand new front-runner has emerged in the St. Albans High School
head football coaching sweepstakes.

Greg Cyrus.

Surprised? Don't be.

There was only one job that could make Cyrus resign his recent
appointment as commissioner of the Mountain State Athletic Conference
and return to coaching. St. Albans. He grew up in St. Albans. He played
football for St. Albans. He graduated from St. Albans High School. And
he still lives near St. Albans. Coaching the Red Dragons is Cyrus' dream
job.

So he's going after it.

And Cyrus has plenty of company. Sources say applicants include
Sissonville head coach Larry Jones, St. Albans assistant Jim Crawford,
Capital assistant Bob Cummings, South Charleston assistants Todd
Chevalier and Dickie Campbell, Herbert Hoover assistant Andy Grogg and
former West Virginia Tech assistant Stevie Edwards.

Noticeably missing from the list is George Washington head coach Moe
Townson and DuPont head coach Dick Whitman. Both were considered leading
candidates for the job at one point or another, but apparently they
didn't apply. Why? The most compelling reason is the Red Dragons' new
coach will not be on St. Albans' faculty.

Look for Whitman to apply for the head football coaching job at
Riverside High School and Townson to stay at GW.

- Speaking of coaching vacancies, there are several applicants for
Cyrus' old job at Nitro High School. Among those interested in becoming
the Wildcats' new head football coach are Sissonville's Jones, Nitro
assistant Jim Casdorph and Sissonville assistant Boob Lanham. But the
odds-on favorite is Nitro defensive coordinator Robert "Little"
Burdette.
