·  Poca coach expects Nitro to lean heavily on passing game

Poca knows full well what’s coming tonight when it lines up against neighboring rival Nitro in its season opener. But that still might not help the Dots.

Nitro looks to ride the arm of senior quarterback Michael Scott when it ventures to O.O. White Stadium. Last year, Scott threw for 307 yards and three touchdowns in the Wildcats’ 40-12 victory over Poca.

With Nitro breaking in new running backs this season, it may lean on Scott a little more than usual.

“We can’t control what they’re doing,’’ said Poca coach Bob Lemley. “All we can do is prepare for what we think they’re going to do. Not many teams have the [passing attack] Nitro’s had the last 10 years or so. They’re good at it.

“One of the hardest things for kids to do is play pass defense. Even if they’re fast, it takes a special talent to do that. It’s hard work. Scott can throw the ball 60 yards. He knows where [receivers] are going and throws the ball before they make their break. If they’re accurate with it, it’s tough to defend.’’
